The Salmon Bay Bridge connects Magnolia to Ballard and has two tracks that carry freight and passenger trains. Photo taken at Commodore Park in June 2016 and posted for Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge with the topic of bridges.

  1. Cool shot! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a …. What is this kind of bridge called? I can’t think of the word! Anyway, I’ve never seen one open like this.

    • It’s a single leaf bascule bridge, which is just a fancy way of saying it’s a drawbridge with only one section that raises instead of two. It looks a bit unusual because the counterweight is above rather than below the bridge deck like most others in the area.

      • That’s too funny. I thought you were trying to remember some more obscure technical term. The older I get the more my brain misfiles words and names like that.
